Residents are being advised to get ready for an upcoming storm expected to bring 70mph winds to various parts of the UK. The Met Office has issued weather warnings due to the potential for power outages, urging people to ensure they have an adequate supply of batteries.

The most severe impacts of the storm are predicted to be felt across Europe, particularly in France, where it has been named Storm Benjamin. However, the UK is also bracing for the effects, with yellow weather warnings in effect for selected areas starting at midnight on Thursday, October 23.

Storm Benjamin is forecasted to move across southern parts of the UK late Wednesday and early Thursday, bringing strong winds and widespread heavy rain. Multiple weather alerts have been issued, including a general warning for rain and two specific warnings for high winds.

As of October 22, the Met Office has reported that southern regions of England and parts of Wales are likely to be affected. One wind warning covers the majority of the west coast of Wales, spanning from Tenby to the Isle of Anglesey in the north, while another warning extends from Hartlepool in the north to Portsmouth in the south.

In a public advisory, meteorological experts recommend taking various safety measures. They suggest securing loose items outside homes, checking road conditions before traveling, and preparing for possible power outages by gathering essential items like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks stated that a low-pressure system moving across southern UK regions will bring heavy rainfall and strong winds. The rain is expected to move from the southwest to northeast across England and Wales, leading to challenging driving conditions and potential flooding in some areas. Strong winds are anticipated along the southern coastal areas.

Thursday is predicted to feature sunny intervals and blustery showers in areas not under warning. Temperatures will be slightly below average, with a cold feel due to brisk winds.

It is advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation evolves, as there is uncertainty regarding the track and intensity of the storm system. Adjustments to forecasts are possible on short notice.
