Residents living near Lake Erie are no strangers to cautions regarding blue-green algae blooms. Advisories include avoiding swimming in the water, keeping pets away, and refraining from ingesting it due to potential health risks like rashes, sore throats, and red eyes. Researchers are now investigating the effects of airborne algae particles on human health, specifically how inhaling these toxins could impact individuals.
Led by David Kennedy, a professor at the University of Toledo, the ongoing Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR) aims to analyze the health implications of airborne algae toxins. The study, which focuses on the western basin of Lake Erie, involves participants living, working, or recreating in the area, irrespective of nationality.
So far, the study has gathered samples from around 200 individuals, representing 75% of the target participants. The research seeks to understand the varying responses of individuals to the toxins and identify any heightened risks for specific groups. Participants provide blood, urine, and breath samples, as well as nasal cavity swabs for analysis.
Experts emphasize that inhaling the toxins could lead to health issues resembling asthma, as commonly observed during the summer bloom season. While long-term data on airborne algae exposure is limited, experts warn that respiratory exposure may pose greater risks than ingestion. The study also aims to determine the duration of airborne toxin presence and its potential impact on coastal communities.
Researchers stress the importance of public awareness and urge caution during peak bloom seasons. They suggest measures like using air purifiers indoors on windy days near affected areas. Ultimately, the study aims to provide communities with vital insights into the risks associated with airborne algae exposure around Lake Erie.
