Elena Rybakina came under fire from tennis legend Pam Shriver for refusing to take a photo with a WTA official after winning the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia and claiming a £4 million prize. Despite posing with other officials during the trophy ceremony, Rybakina notably stayed away from WTA CEO Portia Archer, sparking an uncomfortable moment.
The decision by Rybakina was seen as a protest against her coach, Stefano Vukov, who had been suspended for a year earlier for breaching the WTA’s conduct rules but later had the suspension overturned, allowing him to resume his coaching duties.
Rybakina expressed her satisfaction with Vukov’s return, denying any issues between them and stating that he had never mistreated her. However, her snub of Archer, responsible for overseeing conduct investigations, led to criticism from Shriver, who questioned Rybakina’s actions on social media.
Shriver, a former US Open finalist, criticized Rybakina for disregarding the WTA CEO, emphasizing the importance of standing up against mistreatment in the sport. Rybakina, in response, highlighted the lack of effective communication from the WTA regarding the Vukov situation.
Despite the controversy, Rybakina focused on her impressive victory, describing it as an incredible week and expressing surprise at her success. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka, who had a strong season with notable achievements, including winning the US Open, expressed disappointment at her inability to secure a victory at the Finals.
Sabalenka, emotional in her on-court interview, praised Rybakina’s performance and admitted to feeling the pressure of the match, acknowledging her opponent’s dominance during the final.
