A young woman previously known as a TikTok influencer, involved in a fatal high-speed crash resulting in the deaths of her mother’s lover and his friend, has successfully appealed to reduce her prison sentence. Mahek Bukhari, who was 22 at the time of the incident, had initially been sentenced to a minimum of 31 years and eight months for two counts of murder in September 2023. However, her sentence was recently shortened to 26 years and 285 days after appeal judges acknowledged her young age at the time of the crime.
Mahek, hailing from Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, collaborated with her mother, Ansreen Bukhari, in a scheme following threats from Saqib Hussain to expose his affair with Ansreen using explicit materials. Ansreen received a 27-year prison term in 2023, which remains unchanged.
During the review of the case, it was noted that the sentences for manslaughter handed to Natasha Akhtar, Ameer Jamal, and Sanaf Gulamustafa were deemed excessive. The individuals, convicted of two counts of manslaughter in 2023, originally received 11 years and eight months, 14 years and eight months, and 14 years and nine months in jail, respectively. Their sentences have now been reduced by two years each.
The court emphasized that the severity of the car chase carried a significant risk of harm and death, with all individuals involved being aware of the dangers. The court found the sentences to be unduly harsh and stated that the defendants’ minor roles should have been considered for leniency.
Rekhan Karwan and Raees Jamal, convicted of two counts of murder and imprisoned for life in 2023, with minimum terms of 26 years and 10 months and 31 years, respectively, did not receive reduced sentences. Prosecutors described the crash as a case involving love, obsession, extortion, and cold-blooded murder, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
The affair between Saqib and Ansreen, which started casually but escalated into a serious relationship, led to the tragic events. Saqib resorted to blackmail to maintain the relationship, ultimately resulting in the fatal encounter on the road.
Mahek and her mother orchestrated the deadly ambush that led to the deaths of the two men. Following the crash, Mahek and her mother were swiftly apprehended at their residence. During the investigation, Mahek initially tried to shift blame onto Saqib, portraying him as a threat to himself. However, evidence indicated a different reality of the events that transpired.
After a lengthy trial, the defendants were found guilty of the charges, with Mahek’s social media following being highlighted during the proceedings.
