TNT Sports faced backlash from viewers for their coverage of the first day of The Ashes, with many taking to social media to express their dissatisfaction. While the broadcaster secured the rights to broadcast the prestigious Test cricket event after Sky Sports did not intervene, their performance did not sit well with the audience.
Viewers who tuned in at 1:30 am were met with what they described as amateurish and clueless coverage. Criticism arose due to some commentators not being physically present in Australia, evident when they greeted with “good morning” despite the ongoing afternoon action.
Displeased fans voiced concerns over the lack of diverse commentary voices, pointing out that the team consisted entirely of English commentators, missing the essence of an international tournament like The Ashes.
Despite some on-ground presenters like Sir Alastair Cook and Becky Ives analyzing the game, lead commentators Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch, who are not cricket experts, were based in England, drawing further criticism from supporters.
The coverage’s shortcomings were highlighted, including delays in reporting crucial events like player injuries. England’s poor performance, with Zak Crawley and other key players falling quickly to Mitchell Starc’s bowling, added to the disappointment for fans.
However, as Jofra Archer made a swift impact by dismissing Australian batsmen, the tide seemed to turn briefly. England’s captain, Ben Stokes, also shone by taking crucial wickets, including that of Steven Smith, leading England to end the day in a position of control.
