The debut of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham faced a setback during the initial stages. Practice and qualifying on the first day of the only IndyCar race in Canada had to be called off on Friday due to unfinished track preparations, which prevented the final safety inspection by officials. Organizers stated their intention to reschedule all missed track sessions from the first day to Saturday’s agenda.
This marks the first time that Markham has hosted the event, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held since its inception in 1986. Expressing disappointment, IndyCar President J. Douglas Boles mentioned the challenges faced by the promoter in completing the track build on time, despite substantial assistance from the on-site team.
Mark Coburn from Kitchener and Scott Stobo from Waterloo, both long-time attendees of the race, expressed mixed feelings about the delay in practice and qualifying sessions. They acknowledged the importance of ensuring track safety but also highlighted the impact of the interruption on fan engagement and interest.
IndyCar and the City of Markham disclosed the move from downtown Toronto last September, with the new temporary circuit spanning Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Notable incomplete elements included a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and safety fencing modifications for marshals.
Financial support for the event came from various government levels, with the Ontario government investing $1.5 million and the federal government contributing $3.5 million. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti confirmed significant capital spending exceeding $12 million for race-related infrastructure upgrades.
Friday’s events at the IndyCar race in Canada were open to the public, with donations encouraged for the Make-A-Wish Foundation instead of ticket purchases. Despite the warm weather, fans gathered around the Markham track for activities and driver autograph sessions.
Saturday’s schedule includes an extended day of practice and qualifying sessions, with the qualifying round following the traditional road course knockout format in the early evening. Other racing events, including the USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series, will also take place on the road course throughout the weekend.
Stobo mentioned that they might not return for future events, indicating a sense of completion after the experiences of the day.
