A tragic incident occurred when a man lost his life outside his residence due to a dog’s unintended actions inside a van. James Campbell, a 68-year-old resident of Cantonment, Tampa, Florida, passed away in January 2013 in a sudden accident involving his 1995 Chevrolet van.

While assisting his wife in parking the vehicle, Mr. Campbell had opened the van’s door as he went to open the driveway gates. In the meantime, his wife, Iris Fortner, was seated in the driver’s position and opened her door to check on her husband’s location behind the van.

Seizing the opportunity, the family pet leaped into the driver’s seat, accidentally engaging the accelerator pedal. In a split second, the van moved in reverse, tragically hitting and running over Mr. Campbell.

Despite his wife’s frantic efforts to stop the van, the vehicle had already struck Mr. Campbell, trapping him beneath it. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Mrs. Fortner sustained minor injuries and was taken to West Florida Hospital for treatment.

The unfortunate incident highlighted the dangers of leaving a running vehicle unattended with a loose dog inside. Although no charges were filed, the incident underscored the importance of vehicle safety and pet control.

In another peculiar dog-related event in the same month in Miami, a naked intruder was discovered trying to harm a pet Rottweiler. The homeowners were alerted by their dog’s barking and found the intruder attempting to choke the animal. In self-defense, the homeowner shot the intruder in the leg, detaining him until the police arrived.

Miami Police Department spokesperson Willie Moreno described the intruder’s irrational behavior, emphasizing the homeowner’s justified actions in defending against the naked assailant. The incident served as a reminder of the unpredictable situations homeowners may face and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding their property and pets.
