England suffered a setback as Travis Head delivered a remarkable performance, propelling Australia to their first victory in the Ashes series. Head, a middle-order batsman, showcased his skills after being promoted due to an injury to Usman Khawaja. The hosts required 205 runs for victory following England’s dismissal for 164 in their second innings.

Ben Stokes and his team displayed resilience against Australia on the first day, despite being bowled out for 172 by the hosts on a pitch favoring batsmen. The visitors faced intense pressure but responded well at the Optus Stadium.

Stokes claimed a five-wicket haul, limiting Australia to 123 for 9 before the morning session. Nathan Lyon and Brendan Doggett added nine runs before Brydon Carse dismissed Lyon, giving England a 40-run lead after both teams batted.

Although England seemed in control at lunch, they faltered in the afternoon, losing nine wickets for 99 runs. A stellar performance by Head guided Australia to a comfortable victory.

Head scored a sensational 123 off 83 balls, including 16 boundaries and four maximums. While England’s bowlers excelled in Australia’s first innings, they struggled to make an impact in the second innings.

In batting performances, Zak Crawley endured a disappointing outing with a pair, while Ben Duckett showcased promise before England faltered after his dismissal. Ollie Pope contributed steadily but faced a disappointing exit, triggering a downward spiral. Joe Root managed to avoid a pair but failed to make a substantial impact. Harry Brook’s solid first innings was overshadowed by a duck in the second. Stokes struggled with the bat and conceded runs to Head. Jamie Smith’s dismissal sparked controversy despite his decent performance. Gus Atkinson made a significant impact with the bat, relieving pressure, while Brydon Carse contributed with both bat and ball. Jofra Archer’s pace dropped, resulting in a less impactful performance, while Mark Wood struggled to find his usual rhythm.
