President Donald Trump is reportedly gearing up to broaden the scope of a travel restriction on individuals entering the United States to encompass over 30 countries. This development emerges as the White House has halted immigration applications from 19 countries and canceled citizenship ceremonies nationwide, citing concerns for national security.
Earlier this summer, Trump imposed restrictions on 19 countries, predominantly from African or Muslim-majority nations such as Afghanistan, Iran, and Libya. However, he is now poised to include 11 more countries, marking one of the most far-reaching travel bans in history.
Under the new regulations effective since June 9, nationals from Afghanistan, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen are prohibited from entering the United States. Additionally, foreign nationals from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela face partial restrictions on entering the US under the proclamation.
These bans are part of a series of anti-immigration measures introduced by Trump, which also involve blocking asylum claims from individuals crossing the southern border and directing heavily armed ICE immigration officers to conduct raids nationwide.
While Trump has not officially commented, Secretary of State Kristi Noem hinted at an expanded “full travel ban” on social media, proposing an increase in the number of countries on the restricted list during a meeting with the President. Noem advocated for the inclusion of countries that she believes have been negatively impacting the nation.
In his first term, Trump had expressed his intent to restrict citizens from countries where Islam is the predominant religion and had implemented a travel ban on individuals from seven Muslim-majority countries entering the US.
