A star from the popular TV show “Traitors” expressed her appreciation for the King’s presence at the unveiling of the first memorial honoring LGBT armed forces veterans. Leanne Quigley, a former Army member and winner of Series 3 of a BBC reality program, described the event as deeply impactful. She emphasized the significance of the day, marking 25 years since the ban on LGBT individuals in the military was lifted. Leanne highlighted the relief, validation, and visibility felt by many veterans in attendance.

At 28 years old, Leanne expressed her admiration for the King’s attendance and shared meaningful conversations with veterans who had faced adversity following their dismissal from the armed forces. She noted the sense of acknowledgment and acceptance experienced by those who previously may have felt marginalized. The event marked a historic moment as it was the first time His Majesty participated in an official LGBT gathering.

The ban on LGBT individuals serving in the Army, Royal Navy, and RAF persisted until 2000, causing severe repercussions for many who were discharged, harassed, and even imprisoned due to their sexual orientation. The Mirror has long supported Fighting With Pride’s advocacy for recognition, support, and compensation for LGBT veterans. The dedication service at the National Memorial Arboretum featured emotional tributes and music by the Band of the Irish Guard, creating a poignant atmosphere.

The memorial’s design symbolizes the personal letters used to discredit and harm LGBTQ+ service members. Brigadier Clare Phillips, speaking at the ceremony, highlighted her journey from secrecy to pride and emphasized the importance of honoring past sacrifices. The monument serves as a reminder of progress and the ongoing need for inclusivity and support within the armed forces.

The Minister for Veterans and People, Louise Sandher-Jones, described the day as significant for LGBT veterans and encouraged those affected by the ban to come forward. Discharged veterans have the opportunity to seek financial restitution and restoration of their ranks and medals. Various schemes are in place to support individuals who suffered due to the ban, including non-financial measures to provide assistance and recognition.
