Authorities in Northampton have made a significant bust at an illegal factory, seizing over 2,000 counterfeit weight-loss injections valued at £250,000. This operation, carried out by the UK’s medicines regulator (MHRA) and Northamptonshire Police, marks the largest-ever confiscation of weight loss medication globally. The illicit pens contained tirzepatide, a crucial component in Mounjaro and Zepbound manufactured by Eli Lilly, and retratutide, an experimental weight-loss drug still undergoing trials and not authorized for use. Eli Lilly cautioned that these black-market injections could contain unknown substances.

In addition to the fake injections, authorities also confiscated raw materials, numerous empty pens, and £20,000 in cash. An MHRA spokesperson described the discovery as the first illegal production facility for weight loss medication in the UK and emphasized the substantial risk these unregulated products pose to consumers. Health Secretary Wes Streeting commended the raid as a victory against criminals endangering lives for profit. Streeting urged the public to avoid purchasing weight loss medications from unlicensed sources and advised seeking guidance from healthcare professionals.

Andy Morling, head of the MHRA’s criminal enforcement unit, highlighted the significance of shutting down the illicit manufacturing facility, emphasizing the dangers of untested and unauthorized products. Morling urged individuals to only obtain prescription medications from registered pharmacies with valid prescriptions. Despite the seizure, no arrests have been reported in connection with the incident. Weight-loss injections are exclusively available through the NHS for patients meeting specific criteria.
