After experiencing a brief heatwave recently, the UK is bracing for another period of intense heat, with temperatures forecasted to exceed 37°C on Wednesday. This could potentially set a new temperature record for the day. While the sunny weather is ideal for outdoor activities like beach outings, barbecues, and picnics, the extreme heat may pose challenges for a crucial aspect of modern life – your internet connection.

So, why does hot weather impact internet speeds, and what can be done to prevent Wi-Fi issues? The root of the problem lies with the router – the key device that keeps your home connected. Similar to smartphones and laptops, routers can face performance issues when exposed to high temperatures. Excessive heat can lead to decreased speed and, in severe cases, even complete shutdown of the router.

If you have ever left a phone under direct sunlight, you are likely familiar with the warning messages that appear due to overheating. Routers can encounter similar issues.

Virgin Media, a prominent UK internet provider, emphasized the risks, stating that routers, like phones and laptops, perform better when not exposed to direct sunlight. If the router overheats, it could adversely affect your connection speed or even lead to a complete halt in service.

Typically, a warm room alone is unlikely to cause problems, as modern routers are designed to withstand normal summer temperatures. However, placing the router in direct sunlight, such as on a windowsill, can push it beyond its optimal operating conditions. Think of it as protecting your body from sunburn by seeking shade.

In such scenarios, broadband speeds may decrease, and the router might temporarily shut down until it cools off. To mitigate these issues, the first step is to move the router away from direct sunlight. Additionally, the placement of the router matters in terms of ventilation. While hiding the router in a cupboard may seem neat, poor ventilation can hinder Wi-Fi performance.

Virgin Media advised against placing the router in a cupboard or behind a TV. For optimal performance, position the router in an open area, elevated off the floor, and centrally located in your home. Furthermore, ensure the router is away from devices that can cause interference, such as cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.

Lastly, avoid placing the router near a fish tank, as water can disrupt Wi-Fi signals, affecting connectivity throughout your home. By implementing these simple adjustments, you can safeguard your broadband connection and maintain a smooth internet experience, even during extreme temperatures.
