Ukrainian authorities investigating high-ranking officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration were revealed on Wednesday by anti-corruption agencies. This development comes after the country’s recently sacked defense minister advocated for national elections despite the ongoing conflict with Russia’s invasion.

The probe is focused on exposing an alleged criminal network led by a current and former lawmaker, with involvement from senior officials in the presidential office and other individuals. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office issued a joint statement confirming the ongoing investigation, promising to disclose further details later.

President Zelenskyy has not publicly addressed the investigation but issued a decree removing Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the president’s office. This investigation poses a new challenge to Zelenskyy’s political stability amidst previous controversies, including the resignation of his chief of staff Andriy Yermak last year, who was later implicated in a significant corruption investigation.

Following the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov last month, Ukraine’s parliament approved the appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as the new defense minister. Zelenskyy, who had previously appointed Khmara as acting minister, secured the support of 312 lawmakers for the appointment, surpassing the required majority of 226 votes.

In a surprising move, former Defense Minister Fedorov called for national elections in Ukraine in a video statement posted on YouTube. This call for elections contradicts Zelenskyy’s stance that holding elections under the current martial law due to the ongoing conflict is not feasible. Fedorov emphasized the need for a mechanism that enables Ukraine to restore a democratic process despite the wartime circumstances.

The political turmoil in Ukraine coincides with recent victories in the war against Russia, where innovative drone technology has been utilized to target Russian oil facilities, causing fuel shortages. Additionally, striking Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, and impeding Russian army advancements at the front line have showcased Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Despite these successes, Zelenskyy’s efforts to gain support in U.S.-led peace initiatives have been challenging, and Ukraine remains vulnerable to Russian ballistic missiles due to limited access to U.S.-made Patriot interceptors. The conflict escalated further as drones targeted an oil refinery in Ufa, Russia, with reports of multiple drone interceptions by Russian air defenses over various regions.

The ongoing conflict also saw a deadly drone attack in Ukraine’s Kherson region, resulting in casualties and injuries. The situation remains tense as both countries engage in military confrontations amid escalating tensions.
