A United Airlines flight attendant, Margit Lake, was found to have consumed an excessive amount of vodka, which led to her being ten times over the legal alcohol limit for flying on a transatlantic journey from San Francisco to Heathrow. Lake, aged 56, brought multiple miniature bottles of vodka on board the Boeing 777 flight and required medical attention upon landing in London due to her high blood alcohol level.
According to reports from Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, Lake, a veteran flight attendant of 26 years, resigned from her position following the incident. It was revealed that her blood alcohol content was recorded at 216 milligrams per 100 milliliters, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 20 milligrams for flight attendants in the UK.
During the court proceedings, Lake’s defense attorney, Ben Lansbury, mentioned that she had been struggling with feelings of isolation, family estrangement, and grief, which led her to use alcohol to cope. He stated that Lake deeply regretted her actions and had been actively attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for support.
Magistrate Tony Delliston opted for a non-custodial sentence, imposing a financial penalty on Lake instead. She was fined £1,461 along with a victim surcharge of £584 and court costs of £85.
