The Government is being called upon to create communities that instill pride in residents, as research revealed that less than half of individuals trust their neighbors. Concerns were raised by Joe Fortune, the General Secretary of the Co-operative Party, following Government statistics indicating that only 41% of people believed many in their neighborhood could be relied upon, with just 69% engaging in monthly conversations with neighbors.

The Co-operative Party highlighted the impact of the closure of local amenities such as pubs, swimming pools, libraries, and youth clubs over the past decade, leading to a decline in community spaces. Official data also showed a decrease in the sense of belonging to immediate neighborhoods, with 61% expressing strong attachment, down from 63%, and a decline in community cooperation for neighborhood improvement, dropping from 62% to 56%.

Recent studies uncovered a concerning trend of public swimming pool closures across England, with around 500 pools shutting down since 2010, nearly half of which closed in the last five years. Additionally, the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) disclosed that 35 pubs listed in the previous year’s Good Beer Guide had ceased operations.

Joe Fortune emphasized the importance of addressing these community challenges, stating that the diminishing sense of connection and trust has led to negative consequences across the country. He stressed the need for united communities to combat rising hate and division, advocating for government policies that promote community pride.

Fortune called for a national initiative to reverse the decline in community cohesion, urging the government, particularly the Labour Party, to prioritize strengthening and connecting communities. While acknowledging existing successful community projects, he emphasized the lack of government support for such endeavors, emphasizing the crucial role of policy in fostering strong and united communities.
