Ahead of the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen attributed McLaren’s mistakes as the primary reason for his continued presence in the Formula 1 title battle. Their slip-ups on Sunday not only kept the Red Bull racer in contention but also provided a real opportunity to challenge another British driver on the final day.

Verstappen clinched his first F1 championship by overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi race. Now, as he vies for a fifth consecutive title, the Dutchman trails Lando Norris by only 12 points. Oscar Piastri trails four points behind, setting up a thrilling three-way title decider on the final day, a situation not seen since 2010 when Sebastian Vettel staged a remarkable comeback to win the championship.

Reflecting on past events, Verstappen acknowledged the significance of unpredictable outcomes but maintained a positive outlook for the upcoming challenges. He mocked McLaren for their repeated failures and took a dig at them by highlighting Red Bull’s strategic move to emphasize their superiority.

Following the unexpected turn of events, McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown avoided interviews initially, with Stella later emphasizing that Norris would not receive preferential treatment despite the heightened threat from Verstappen. While Piastri remains in contention, the odds are against him, as he acknowledged feeling disheartened by the circumstances.

Piastri acknowledged the slim chances of a championship win and vowed to replicate his strong performance in Abu Dhabi. Even if Piastri wins the race, Norris securing a podium finish would be sufficient to clinch the championship, barring unforeseen incidents.

Verstappen’s race engineer and Red Bull’s Helmut Marko insinuated favoritism towards Norris during the race, drawing a strong rebuttal from Mercedes’ Toto Wolff. Wolff dismissed the claims as baseless and emphasized the competitive nature of the sport.
