Virgin Media is set to upgrade the home routers of some broadband customers for improved performance. The company announced that users still utilizing the older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices will soon have the opportunity to switch to the newer Hub 5 technology at no extra cost.
The Hub 5 features upgraded Wi-Fi 6 technology, providing faster and more reliable connections compared to the older routers. Eligible customers will receive notifications via email in the upcoming weeks and months as the gradual rollout of the upgrade progresses throughout 2026.
Virgin Media highlighted that the Hub 5 is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas to enhance coverage within homes. Selected customers using outdated hubs will benefit from the upgrade, with thousands expected to experience the improvements by 2026. Customers who qualify will be contacted directly by Virgin Media, negating the need for immediate action until they receive communication. To confirm eligibility, customers can log into their My Virgin Media account online.
To identify the router model, customers can check the sticker on the back or bottom of the device or use the Virgin Media Connect app for verification. Upgrading to the Hub 5 can enhance broadband experiences significantly, offering wider Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and support for future updates. The router is designed to handle faster Gig1 speeds, enabling quicker downloads and streaming. With Gig1 speeds, users can download a full HD movie in under 40 seconds, over 10 times faster than the UK average.
Wi-Fi 6 represents the latest wireless networking technology, delivering faster speeds, greater efficiency, and enhanced performance in busy environments. It can accommodate more connected devices simultaneously and offers improved performance across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Additionally, Wi-Fi 6 is energy-efficient, making it suitable for modern smart homes with multiple connected devices and high data demands. Although Wi-Fi 7 technology is available, Wi-Fi 6 remains ideal for the average user.
