On a chilly and damp winter day, few things are as inviting as a cozy country pub radiating warmth. The allure of a charming country pub nestled in a quaint Vale of Glamorgan village beckoned me for three compelling reasons. First and foremost, its stellar reputation for delectable cuisine was widely known. Secondly, despite cycling past it numerous times, the temptation to abandon my bike and step inside for a pint was hard to resist.

However, the most significant draw was that this particular pub is owned by a renowned sports figure. Two decades ago, I was present in the crowd when Gavin Henson executed one of Welsh rugby’s most iconic and pivotal kicks. Despite not being the designated kicker that day, Henson’s remarkable 44-meter kick from an extremely challenging angle secured a historic victory for Wales against England in Cardiff, ushering in a new era for Welsh rugby.

Henson, with his distinctive appearance including spiky hair, bronzed skin, shaved legs, and impressive physique, rose to stardom alongside singer Charlotte Church, forming a celebrity power couple dubbed the “Welsh Posh and Becks” in the media. Beyond his celebrity status, Henson was revered for his exceptional athletic prowess and dedication. Despite his penchant for standing out, his recent inclination towards a private life in the tranquil village of St Brides Major, near his childhood home, has been evident.

In 2019, Henson and his wife, Katie, undertook the ownership of The Fox, a venture that marked a new chapter in their lives. Following a comprehensive renovation, the pub reopened in February 2020, just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic which forced the closure of pubs nationwide. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and Brexit, The Fox garnered accolades for its cuisine and hospitality. Notably, Henson himself was seen attending to tables, adding a personal touch to the dining experience.

Presently, The Fox exudes a sense of timeless charm and comfort. The interior, a blend of homeliness and elegance, features flagstone flooring, navy and cream walls, rustic wooden furniture, and tasteful Christmas decor. Settling into a cozy corner table, we savored Butty Bach ale and Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone lager while perusing the menu. With wine options starting at a modest price, the Sunday menu offered a concise yet enticing selection of starters and main courses.

Opting for ham hock with confit egg yolk and a fishcake with samphire and caper butter as starters, we relished the crispy exteriors and flavorful fillings. For the main course, we indulged in roast Welsh beef and shoulder of Welsh lamb, both impeccably prepared and accompanied by an array of delectable sides. The generous portions and exquisite flavors left a lasting impression.

After a delightful dining experience, our bill for two starters, two mains, two kids’ meals, beverages, and a fruit juice came to £91. The reasonable pricing combined with the inviting ambiance made for a memorable visit. As we savored the experience, it was evident that fellow diners shared our sentiments, with one expressing intent to return—a sentiment I wholeheartedly echo, despite missing the chance to encounter one of my sporting idols.
