Serena and Venus Williams have reunited for the upcoming U.S. Open tournament, securing a wildcard entry after winning the event twice in the past. Serena made a comeback to tennis this season following a four-year hiatus, with plans to compete alongside Venus at Wimbledon earlier, but had to withdraw due to a knee injury sustained during a singles match. Their recent appearance at the Cincinnati Open resulted in a first-round defeat.
Having claimed the U.S. Open doubles titles in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast a 27-7 record in their nine previous doubles appearances. Their most recent match at the U.S. Open in 2022 ended in a first-round loss, hinting at Serena’s potential retirement from the Flushing Meadows venue.
During this year’s U.S. Open, Serena, 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz for mixed doubles, clinching one victory before exiting in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Venus, 46, is gearing up for the women’s singles competition.
The Williams siblings have a remarkable track record, clinching 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They also held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for eight weeks.
Although Serena opted out of the singles competition at this year’s U.S. Open, she decided to participate in both doubles events through wildcard entries. Their initial U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s first singles triumph at the same tournament, marking the start of their dominant partnership that peaked around a decade later.
Their achievements include securing titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by another U.S. Open win later that year. Subsequent victories at the Australian Open in 2010 and the French Open solidified their status as holders of all four major doubles trophies at that time.
The commencement of the women’s doubles tournament is scheduled for September 3.
