A 14-year-old girl named Kylie Toberman was tragically found deceased in a motorhome located behind her residence in Vandalia, Illinois, just a few hours after she was reported missing. The teenager was last seen at around 9 pm on a Thursday and reported missing the following morning, wearing a red sweatshirt and black leggings.
Kylie’s body was discovered later that day, and the cause of her death remains unknown. She resided with her adoptive mother, two sisters, and her step-uncle, Arnold B Rivera Jr, who lived in the motorhome where her body was found, according to her biological mother, Megan Zeller.
Authorities from the Fayette County Emergency Management Agency, alongside the Vandalia Police Department, initiated a search for Rivera Jr, eventually locating and apprehending him. Rivera Jr was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated sexual assault, and concealing a homicide. Previous reports revealed his criminal history, including charges from 2000 related to burglary and criminal sexual abuse.
Megan Zeller, Kylie’s mother, pleaded for help in finding her daughter before sadly announcing her passing. The family situation was complicated, as Zeller did not have custody of her daughters, who were under the care of an adoptive guardian, due to the death of Kylie’s father. The community remembered Kylie as a dedicated student excelling in academics and sports.
Local authorities, including the Illinois State Police, are actively investigating the case. The Vandal Wrestling Takedown Club, where Kylie was a member, expressed profound sorrow over her passing, while the high school she attended also released a statement mourning the loss of a student.
In light of the ongoing investigation and out of respect for the family, the school district declined to provide further details, emphasizing the importance of supporting the affected students, staff, and families during this difficult time. The school’s crisis response team and counselors stand ready to offer assistance to those in need.
