Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows 10 nearly six months ago, leaving many laptops vulnerable to cyber threats and malware due to the lack of security updates. While newer devices can upgrade to Windows 11, older PCs may not meet the system requirements, forcing users to make tough choices.

Users of unsupported laptops can either continue using them as is, pay for extended updates (ESUs), or invest in new devices pre-installed with Windows 11. For those looking for an alternative, Google has collaborated with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit featuring ChromeOS Flex software, which can rejuvenate old laptops and extend their lifespan.

ChromeOS Flex is a lightweight operating system that can be installed on older computers, essentially turning them into Chromebook-style devices. Users gain access to services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to purchase a new laptop. While ChromeOS Flex has always been available for free download, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process, allowing users to test the system from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. These kits have gained popularity, with high demand leading to them being temporarily out of stock.

In response to the end of Windows 10 support, Google stated in a blog post that its partnership with Back Market offers a cost-effective solution to modernize existing PCs with the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit. Priced around £3, the kit includes a reusable USB stick, contributing to reducing electronic waste. Despite the strong demand, the item is currently unavailable.

Google highlights the environmental benefits of ChromeOS Flex, emphasizing that prolonging the use of existing devices can lower carbon footprint and energy consumption compared to manufacturing new laptops. The system enables older devices to be utilized longer, diverting hardware from landfills and reducing emissions associated with new device production.

For those considering a switch, devices compatible with ChromeOS Flex can explore this option as a sustainable and efficient solution.
