Anthony Joshua is set to make his comeback in a highly anticipated fight worth an astonishing £142 million, marking one of the most controversial matches in boxing history. The former heavyweight champion will go head-to-head with YouTube sensation Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, airing on Netflix, with both fighters sharing the massive purse equally. However, the fight announcement has triggered immediate backlash, as enraged fans accuse the Olympic gold medalist of prioritizing money over the sport’s integrity, turning boxing into a spectacle. The showdown will take place at the Kaseya Centre in an eight-round battle.

This match replaces Paul’s previously canceled exhibition with Gervonta Davis, which was called off due to a legal dispute involving Davis and his ex-girlfriend. The former Disney star, 28, confirmed the fight confidently, stating, “This is not a simulation; this is Judgment Day. When I defeat Anthony Joshua, all doubts will vanish.” These bold statements have only fueled discontent within the boxing community, despite repeated denials of rumors leading up to the official confirmation.

Joshua, aged 36, is making his comeback after being knocked out by Daniel Dubois in September 2024. Anticipating the controversial nature of the fight, the British boxer defended his decision by stating, “I took a break, and now I’m returning with a spectacular event. Whether you support it or not, I am here to generate massive interest.” He further added, “I am about to make waves across the internet with Jake Paul’s face.”

The choice to face Paul has divided the boxing world. Advocates argue that the matchup mirrors the evolving financial landscape of boxing, where streaming services and celebrity status influence matchmaking decisions. Critics, on the other hand, believe it devalues the sport by prioritizing fame over skill, with many labeling the £142 million purse as an insult to genuine fighters.

Social media was quick to criticize Joshua, with fans expressing disappointment in his opponent choice. Some users questioned Joshua’s decision to fight someone from Disney, likening the match to WWE rather than professional boxing. However, some supporters defended Joshua, acknowledging his financial gains from the bout as a smart move.

Nakisa Bidarian, CEO of Most Valuable Promotions, which represents Paul, revealed that the idea for the fight was conceived months ago by Paul himself. With Netflix set to broadcast the event to a global audience, it is expected to be a financial success.

Paul’s entry into elite boxing has sparked debates. Rising from his YouTube career, where he boasts nearly 21 million subscribers, Paul transitioned into the ring, primarily competing at cruiserweight. His victory against former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr earned him a number 14 WBA cruiserweight ranking. In contrast, Joshua has a more extensive boxing career, with over 160 rounds fought in a 12-year span, holding a record of 28 wins and 4 losses, with 25 knockouts. He has previously unified the heavyweight division and headlined major events worldwide.
