New video footage has surfaced, revealing the frighteningly close encounter Liam Lawson had with two track marshals who dashed across the track during the Mexico City Grand Prix. The Racing Bulls driver narrowly avoided a collision on the third lap of the race.
The marshals stationed at turn one were instructed to wait for all cars to pass before clearing debris from the track. Unfortunately, they were unaware that Lawson had made a pit stop to replace his damaged front wing after the first lap.
In a radio communication, the 23-year-old expressed shock, exclaiming, “I could have killed them mate.” Video captured from the sidelines highlighted the peril the marshals faced, underscoring Lawson’s quick reactions. Following the race, the driver remained astounded by the incident.
Reflecting on the incident, Lawson expressed disbelief, stating, “It was so dangerous. It’s pretty unacceptable. We can’t understand how on a live track marshals can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why. I’m sure we’ll get some sort of explanation, but it really can’t happen again.”
The FIA issued a statement addressing the incident, mentioning an ongoing investigation to determine the sequence of events that led to the dangerous situation. They clarified that once Lawson pitted, instructions to dispatch marshals were canceled, and caution flags were displayed in the area.
