Keir Starmer has cautioned about forthcoming “tough but equitable” choices in the upcoming Budget amidst a challenging economic environment.

During a private meeting with Labour MPs, the Prime Minister expressed concerns over the lasting repercussions of Tory austerity and a flawed Brexit deal, stating the impact is more severe than initially anticipated. Starmer emphasized that a Labour government would prioritize Labour values, safeguarding the NHS and enhancing affordability for struggling citizens.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Rachel Reeves is grappling with a substantial financial gap of £20-£30 billion to adhere to spending guidelines. Reeves, set to present the Budget on November 26, is also slated to deliver a crucial economic address this week.

In light of recent events, where Starmer refrained from reiterating Labour’s commitment to shielding the working class from tax hikes, speculation has arisen that Reeves might raise income tax in the Budget, potentially contradicting the party’s election promises.

Speaking at a Parliamentary Labour Party gathering, Starmer reassured MPs that the Budget would align with Labour principles, emphasizing protection for public services like the NHS, debt reduction, and cost-of-living improvements.

Acknowledging the challenging economic circumstances, Starmer highlighted the impacts of Tory policies and the pandemic on Britain’s productivity, underscoring the need for decisive yet equitable decisions to revitalize the country for the long term under a Labour government.

Starmer criticized the Tories’ economic track record, cautioning against trusting them in the future, and criticized Nigel Farage’s Reform UK for advocating cuts that could jeopardize the NHS while prioritizing benefits for billionaires.

Senior Labour MP Dame Emily Thornberry emphasized the importance of unity and discipline among Labour MPs leading up to the Budget, suggesting that sharing ideas with Reeves privately would be more effective than public discourse.
