Many individuals may overlook their pension funds, particularly if they have changed jobs frequently. Research conducted by the Pensions Policy Institute in 2024 revealed that an estimated £31.1 billion is currently dormant or unclaimed in pension accounts.

John Ferguson, a 32-year-old security professional residing in Edinburgh, managed to uncover £10,000 in lost pension savings by using the Penny app. Through the app, he identified seven pension pots, two of which he was unaware of previously. Ferguson suspects that there might be two or three more pensions awaiting discovery.

Utilizing the Penny app involves providing your National Insurance number and any pertinent details about past employment or pension providers to locate your pension funds. The app also offers the option to consolidate multiple pensions into a single account, but it is essential to consider factors such as transfer fees, potential loss of benefits, and charges associated with the new provider. Penny typically charges 0.75% annually for its default pension plans, prompting the recommendation to seek free pension advice before making significant decisions regarding retirement funds.

For those seeking lost pensions, the Pension Tracing Service, a free tool provided by the government, can assist by providing contact information for pension providers based on your previous employment history. However, details on the amount invested are not disclosed through this service; individuals must contact the pension administrator directly for such information.

A new pensions dashboard tool is set to launch this year, allowing individuals to access all their pension information in one centralized platform. By October 31, 2026, around 3,000 providers and schemes are expected to be integrated into the dashboard, offering a comprehensive overview of pension holdings.
