A significant transformation is on the horizon for phone services in the UK, prompting homeowners to take action before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have long facilitated communication are being phased out in favor of cutting-edge technology known as Digital Voice, which relies on broadband for making calls.

This transition is not only necessary to align with contemporary requirements but also enhances reliability and introduces new functionalities like enhanced call clarity, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls.

Scheduled to take effect from January 2027, the comprehensive upgrade has spurred BT to launch a campaign, spearheaded by Clare Balding, urging households to inspect their landlines and ensure readiness for the digital era.

This initiative coincides with recent research revealing a tendency among Brits to procrastinate essential tasks, often assuming that functional systems do not demand immediate attention.

Clare Balding emphasized the importance of responding promptly to provider notifications to maintain seamless landline services, assuring that BT will provide support throughout the transition. Customers are likely to retain their existing numbers, without any anticipated increase in costs as the switch to Digital Voice takes place seamlessly by connecting phones to broadband hubs instead of traditional wall sockets.

In cases where exceptions arise, contacting the service provider may be necessary to resolve any connectivity issues. Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, stressed the significance of embracing this once-in-a-generation upgrade to fortify the UK’s communication infrastructure, emphasizing the benefits of improved reliability and security through the adoption of digital technology.

BT also highlighted the importance for customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their provider promptly to ensure tailored support is in place.

Digital Voice, BT’s innovative home phone service, replaces copper connections with broadband technology, offering advanced features like Multi Call for conference calls and call diversion to mobile phones. It guarantees improved call quality and eliminates disruptions like crackling conversations, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone to maximize these benefits.

Most households can seamlessly transition to Digital Voice without altering their phone usage habits, as the cost of this service is bundled with broadband in a single package price, without any additional charges for Digital Voice services.
