Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps has released new images from the site of a tragic accident involving British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. The incident, which claimed the lives of two individuals, occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Joshua was hospitalized after being rescued from the wreckage of the SUV he was traveling in with other passengers when a burst tire caused the vehicle to collide with a stationary lorry.
Authorities are conducting an investigation into the crash, with updates coming from both the Ogun State police and the FRSC. The FRSC shared previously unseen images of the damaged SUV and the truck it collided with on their official X page. The pictures show officials on the scene alongside witnesses, with the back of the truck cordoned off.
In a statement, the FRSC confirmed the fatal crash and detailed the events leading up to it. The organization reported that the crash involved a Lexus Jeep carrying Anthony Joshua and a stationary truck. Of the five adult males involved, two lost their lives, one was injured, and two escaped unharmed. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was rescued from the scene.
The FRSC emphasized that the crash was caused by the Lexus Jeep exceeding the speed limit and losing control while overtaking the stationary truck. The organization extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery. They urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations, avoid dangerous overtaking, and prioritize safety on high-speed roads like the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
According to preliminary reports by the Ogun State government, the two deceased individuals were identified as male foreign nationals. Joshua has not made any public statements following the accident, and his current hospital location has not been disclosed by authorities.
