Four Members of Parliament (MPs) who were suspended by the Labour Party have been reinstated after discussions with the Chief Whip. Brian Leishman, Chris Hinchliff, Neil Duncan-Jordan, and Rachael Maskell were suspended in July for breaching party discipline. Following a review of their recent conduct, the Labour whip has been restored to all four MPs. They were part of a group of Labour backbenchers who voted against the government in July over disability benefit cuts, which were subsequently abandoned due to a significant revolt.
In a statement, Rachael Maskell expressed gratitude for the reinstatement of the whip and reaffirmed her commitment to Labour values and advocacy for those in need. She emphasized the importance of addressing poverty and ensuring a better future for children living in impoverished conditions.
Brian Leishman, representing Alloa and Grangemouth, highlighted the significance of having the whip restored, emphasizing his loyalty to the Labour Party and its role in effecting necessary societal changes. Neil Duncan-Jordan, the MP for Poole, expressed satisfaction at regaining the Labour whip after being part of the Labour and trade union movement for four decades. Chris Hinchliff also welcomed his reinstatement and emphasized his dedication to serving his constituency and advancing Labour’s mission of prioritizing people and the environment over profit.
The MPs’ return to the Labour fold signals a renewed focus on addressing key societal issues and working towards a fairer and more equitable society.
