A mother experienced a horrifying moment when her young child began choking on a sweet purchased from Aldi, causing him to stop breathing and turn blue. Bethany Holden recounted giving her 16-month-old son, Brody McAllister, some ‘Dino Gems’ candies as a dessert after dinner on October 22. Halfway through the packet, Brody suddenly fell silent, alerting his parents to the choking situation.

In a quick response, Bethany, a 29-year-old stay-at-home mom, started patting Brody’s back while her partner, Stefan McAllister, administered back blows to clear the child’s airways. Despite their efforts, Brody struggled to breathe, turning blue with bulging eyes. Seeking help from a neighbor who performed additional back blows, Brody eventually cried out in relief.

Following the scare, Brody was taken to the hospital where doctors confirmed no internal injuries. However, the incident left Bethany concerned about the product’s safety. She pointed out that the packaging of the £1.09 Dino Gems sweets lacked age restriction information and suggested labeling them as suitable for ages three and above.

Bethany emphasized the absence of age guidance on the sweets’ box, revealing that Brody had consumed about half the packet before the choking incident occurred. After the ordeal, she stressed the necessity of age restrictions due to the candies’ chewy nature.

Aldi expressed regret over the incident and mentioned compliance with all labeling regulations while acknowledging Bethany’s feedback. The supermarket reached out to Bethany to discuss potential changes to the product’s packaging.

In response, an Aldi spokesperson conveyed sympathy for Ms. Holden’s ordeal and expressed relief that her son had recovered fully. While affirming adherence to labeling rules, Aldi stated a willingness to consider improvements to the product’s packaging based on customer feedback.
