MPs are pressing for explanations regarding Prince Andrew’s rent-free arrangement at Royal Lodge in light of the “serious and disturbing allegations” surrounding him. The royal figure has been urged to vacate his 30-room Windsor residence due to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the highly favorable rent deal he has enjoyed for over two decades, paying only a nominal sum known as a ‘peppercorn’ to the Crown Estate.
The influential Parliamentary watchdog, famously known as the ‘queen of select committees,’ has formally requested clarifications from the Treasury and Crown Estate regarding the lucrative lease granted to Andrew. Concerns have arisen about whether the taxpayer is being disadvantaged by the Royal Lodge agreement, as revenues generated by the Crown Estate are typically allocated to the Treasury for public expenditure.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), responsible for scrutinizing the expenditure of public funds, has sought information on the lease status and rationale behind the opulent property’s arrangement. PAC chairman Sir Geoffrey Clifton Brown emphasized the public interest in scrutinizing the use of public funds concerning Prince Andrew, especially given the serious allegations against him and his non-active royal status.
The PAC is particularly interested in ensuring that the terms of the lease for Royal Lodge are providing optimal value for money, especially considering recent developments and Andrew’s altered responsibilities. The committee is also focused on enforcing the lease terms, including maintenance requirements, to preserve the historical and cultural significance of the royal residence.
Following the PAC’s request, the Crown Estate and Treasury have until November 28 to respond, after which the committee will determine its next course of action. Notably, in 2003, Andrew acquired a 75-year lease for the Grade-II listed Royal Lodge for £1 million and has since paid a symbolic annual rent of one peppercorn if demanded.
The monarchy is under escalating pressure to address the controversy surrounding Andrew, with parliamentary debates on the horizon. Despite relinquishing his Duke of York title amid allegations of sexual abuse by Virginia Giuffre, Andrew’s living arrangements remain a focal point of public scrutiny. Discussions are reportedly underway for Andrew to vacate Royal Lodge, potentially in exchange for Frogmore Cottage and Adelaide Cottage.
