Former top jockey Luke Tarrant has been detained in custody due to three charges of armed robbery. Tarrant, currently serving a 12-month racing disqualification for a different offense, was denied bail during his appearance before magistrates in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia recently.

The charges against Tarrant include three counts of armed robbery, trespassing with intent to commit a serious crime, and possession of illegal substances, as reported by Racenet.com. The offense of robbery carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison, and in cases involving armed robbery, collaboration with others, or personal violence, the penalty can escalate to a life sentence.

Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19.

The 31-year-old jockey, who last participated in a race in August, has achieved success with 502 wins, including three victories in Group races. One of his notable accomplishments was winning the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015.

In 2020, Tarrant was banned for six months after confessing to assaulting another jockey in the weighing room. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for a year for his refusal to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry regarding alleged falsification of health assessment forms utilized for licensing.

The matter was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, which directed Tarrant to enter a plea. However, after four weeks, there was no response from him.

In its ruling, the Commission panel emphasized the importance of participants assisting in inquiries and condemned Tarrant’s failure to comply. Stewards concluded that a 12-month disqualification, effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026, was warranted given the circumstances.
