In a recently resurfaced video clip, Wes Streeting expressed his ambition to become Prime Minister during an interview back in 2018. The Health Secretary, who had to dispel rumors of planning a coup against Keir Starmer, was one of the MPs asked about the future PM in a ten-year time frame as part of comedian Matt Forde’s Unspun series.
While other MPs like Paul Sweeney, Preet Kaur Gill, Rupa Huq, and John Woodcock foresaw Jeremy Corbyn as the future PM, Conservative Tim Loughton suggested Kemi Badenoch. When asked on the comedy show, Mr. Streeting humorously mentioned, “I think probably me.”
The resurfaced clip coincided with Mr. Streeting denying any involvement in plotting against Mr. Starmer amid escalating speculation about the PM’s position. He criticized recent remarks made by individuals within Downing Street, labeling them as unhelpful and self-destructive behavior.
The Health Secretary compared the internal strife within the party to a reality TV show, likening it to the recent dismissal of rugby star Joe Marler. He reiterated his support for the PM and emphasized unity within the Cabinet.
During a session of PMQs, Mr. Starmer commended Mr. Streeting for his efforts in reducing NHS waiting lists, despite facing skepticism from the opposition benches about Cabinet cohesion. Mr. Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding the country and condemned any attacks on his Cabinet members.
Mr. Streeting’s achievements in exceeding expectations by delivering five million additional appointments under a Labour government were acknowledged.
