Heineken, a major beer company, has unveiled a plan to reduce its workforce by as many as 6,000 positions. This decision comes as the company, known for brands like Amstel and Birra Moretti, faces decreased beer demand and challenging market conditions. Over the next two years, Heineken intends to eliminate between 5,000 and 6,000 jobs, affecting approximately 7% of its global employees.

In the UK, Heineken’s operations, with offices in Edinburgh and various other locations, employ around 2,100 individuals. Additionally, the company’s Star Pubs and Bars division manages 2,400 establishments throughout the UK. However, details regarding the impact on the UK branch have not been disclosed by the Dutch brewer.

Furthermore, mobile and broadband customers will now receive protection from unexpected mid-contract price increases following a commitment made by major telecom providers. These companies are now required to inform customers of any price rises in specific monetary terms rather than linking them to inflation rates. Despite these regulations, some telecom firms have been criticized for announcing larger price hikes than initially communicated.

The Financial Conduct Authority has introduced new rules to enhance consumer protection for individuals utilizing buy now pay later (BNPL) services. These rules aim to prevent customers from falling into excessive debt by providing clear agreement information, conducting affordability checks, and ensuring transparency on payment schedules. The BNPL market, valued at over £13 billion in 2024, is led by providers like Klarna.

Discount supermarket Aldi has announced a £300 million investment to upgrade and expand its existing stores in the UK, in addition to the recent commitment of £370 million to open 40 new stores by 2026. These enhancements include store extensions and energy-efficient measures like installing fridge doors to reduce energy consumption.

As families face increased expenses during the upcoming half-term school break, some are turning to free-entry attractions, such as museums, to minimize costs. Additionally, restaurant chains like Bella Italia are offering special deals, such as Kids Eat Free promotions, to help families save money on dining out.

A new analysis from the Centre for Ageing Better reveals that individuals working past the state pension age contribute over £60 billion annually to the UK economy. The employment rate for workers aged 65 and above has more than doubled since 2000, reaching 13.2%, with over 1.7 million people in this age group currently in the workforce.
