A lifeguard in Kauai, Hawaii, named Chance Swanson, recently survived a tiger shark attack while surfing at Hanalei Bay. During the incident, local lifeguards spotted him with a significant leg injury, prompting a swift rescue operation using a jet-ski to bring him back to shore. Despite the sudden and violent nature of the shark attack, Chance remained conscious and knew he was being bitten.

Following the attack, Chance received immediate aid from friends who applied a tourniquet to his wounds. The beach was subsequently closed, and warning signs were posted due to ongoing shark sightings in the area. Chance was quickly transported to medical facilities for emergency treatment, where he underwent surgery for severe injuries including nerve and tendon damage.

After a skin graft surgery using tissue from his thigh, Chance is now on the path to recovery, although it may take up to a year for his nerves to fully regenerate. Despite the traumatic experience, Chance remains determined to return to surfing and lifeguarding, emphasizing the importance of safety measures such as using technology like a shark band for protection.

Throughout his recovery journey, Chance has been overwhelmed by the support and love from the community. He aims to give back and raise awareness for hospital and ocean safety initiatives in Hawaii. Those interested in supporting Chance’s recovery can donate to his Go Fund Me page.
