Team GB has made a triumphant start at the Winter Olympics with Matt Weston clinching the gold medal in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, emerged as a top contender for Team GB in Milano Cortina and dominated the competition from the outset, leading after the initial two heats.
His first two runs clocked in at 56.21 and 55.88 seconds respectively, resulting in a combined time of 1:52.09 going into the second day. Weston continued his impressive performance with a swift time of 55.63 seconds in the third heat.
The pinnacle of Weston’s achievement came with a record-breaking final run of 55.61 seconds. Overwhelmed with emotion, Weston shed tears of joy as he celebrated alongside teammate Marcus Wyatt and the Team GB coaching staff.
This victory marked a remarkable comeback for Weston, who had finished 15th in the previous Winter Olympics. In contrast, Wyatt, while showing improvement on the second day in Italy, secured the seventh position with a total time of 3:45.77.
The gold medal secured by Weston has placed Team GB on the Winter Olympics medal table. Meanwhile, the German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer claimed the silver and bronze medals respectively.
Reflecting on Weston’s exceptional performance, Lizzie Yarnold remarked on his swift decision-making and intense physical and emotional demands of the sport. Team GB chef de mission, Eve Muirhead, expressed her elation for Weston’s achievement, highlighting his composure under pressure and the tremendous support he received.
