Wanda Barzee, the infamous female kidnapper from America, has been captured in a new police mugshot for violating her release terms. Sporting a pink jumper and a wide grin, the 80-year-old was seen updating her information on the Utah Sex Offender Registry. This cheerful demeanor sharply contrasts with her previous appearance in a photo from 2003 when she was convicted, alongside her husband Brian David Mitchell, for the abduction of Elizabeth Smart at the age of 14.

Barzee has a history of showing joy upon returning to custody. After serving a mere 15 years for her involvement in Smart’s nine-month ordeal, she was released in 2018 under the condition of registering as a sex offender. However, in May, she breached the registry regulations by visiting two parks, prohibited areas for convicted sex offenders under Utah state law. This violation put her at risk of being sent back to prison, prompting a swift response from Smart, who condemned Barzee’s actions through her foundation’s Instagram page.

Barzee’s justification for entering the parks, claiming she was following divine commands, was met with criticism from Smart. This rationale mirrored the same excuse Barzee and Mitchell used during Smart’s captivity in 2002. Smart had previously expressed disbelief at Barzee’s release and cited the recent breach as confirmation of her concerns.

Acknowledging the authorities’ prompt action, Smart emphasized the importance of taking such violations seriously to prioritize survivor safety. She urged lawmakers and officials to uphold the significance of sex offender registries and release conditions for the sake of public safety.

In conclusion, Smart recalled her mother’s advice to not let her traumatic experience define her life. Despite the challenges, she remains resolute in refusing to live in fear and is determined to continue living freely. Elizabeth Smart’s abduction remains a harrowing chapter in U.S. history, with Mitchell, the perpetrator, serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole since his conviction in 2010.
