Keir Starmer has denounced the “unacceptable” assaults on Wes Streeting following a failed attempt by No10 to quash threats to the PM’s leadership. Supporters of the Prime Minister launched a preemptive attack against a possible post-Budget uprising, cautioning that Mr. Starmer would confront any effort to depose him. However, the maneuver, which seemed to specifically target the Health Secretary, ended in a major setback.

A conflict broke out on Wednesday as Mr. Streeting criticized the “toxic environment” in No10, with one MP likening aides to characters from “The Thick of It.” Mr. Starmer was compelled to publicly distance himself from the attacks in the Commons on Wednesday, throwing his support behind his Health Secretary, whom he praised for doing an “excellent job.”

“I consider any attack on a member of my Cabinet completely inappropriate,” he stated, denying ever sanctioning briefings against his top team members. During a subsequent briefing, the PM’s political spokesperson reiterated that “any unauthorized briefing against Cabinet Ministers would be addressed.”

The spokesperson affirmed the PM’s full confidence in his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, whom some MPs sought to blame for the unauthorized briefing. Mr. Streeting vehemently refuted allegations that he was scheming to overthrow the PM in a planned media appearance preceding a significant speech on the NHS. He criticized the “self-defeating” rumors being spread by individuals overly fixated on “Celebrity Traitors.”

“This is one of the most severe attacks on a loyal member that I’ve witnessed since Joe Marler was expelled and exiled in the final,” he stated. “It’s an utterly counterproductive briefing, particularly because it’s unfounded, and I fail to see how anyone believes it benefits the Prime Minister.”

Blaming a “toxic atmosphere” in Downing Street, Mr. Streeting called for the dismissal of those responsible for the briefings. He expressed disapproval of calling Labour MPs “feral” and sabotaging a team member who is actively advocating for the Government and delivering promised reforms.

The dispute arises amidst concerns among MPs as Mr. Starmer grapples with improving Labour’s poll ratings amid a surge from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. It also comes just two weeks before Rachel Reeves presents a crucial Budget expected to include substantial tax increases deviating from the party’s manifesto.

Labour MPs voiced their anger on Wednesday over the decision to fuel Westminster gossip about Mr. Starmer’s future. One Labour MP criticized the PM’s approach, stating, “The operation is effectively preparing MPs for a challenging Budget, but they jeopardize it by needlessly attacking Wes.”

Another MP added, “This undermines our promise of stability and mature leadership. How can he navigate international matters proficiently yet struggle with his own MPs?” A chair of the Labour MP Red Wall group cautioned against public infighting, urging unity and solidarity within the party.

In response to the briefings, one minister dismissed the concerns, advising the party to refocus on their duties.
