Gary Hetherington will share a final toast with colleagues this Friday as he concludes his role as the chief executive of Leeds Rhinos.

Hetherington’s departure marks the end of an incredible era, leaving a profound impact on everyone associated with the club. Over nearly thirty years, the Rhinos have excelled, reaching 30 finals, securing 18 trophies, and acquiring top-tier players in the sport.

Notably, Hetherington spearheaded the establishment of a thriving academy that produced key players like Kevin Sinfield, leading the ‘golden generation.’ His tenure also saw significant developments such as the stadium’s complete overhaul, the creation of the Rhinos Foundation, a successful women’s team, a disabled team, and a longstanding partnership with Yorkshire CCC.

From his humble origins in Castleford, Hetherington has risen to become one of the most accomplished and respected sports administrators in the UK.

Reflecting on his journey, Hetherington expressed, “In every role, the goal is to leave a positive impact, and I believe I have achieved that here.” Together with property magnate Paul Caddick, they took charge of the Rhinos nearly three decades ago, facing a club burdened with a £5.5m debt and sporting challenges.

Despite the obstacles, their collaboration transformed the Rhinos into a global powerhouse in rugby.

A self-proclaimed “control freak” and dedicated worker, Hetherington’s unwavering commitment is evident in his daily routine, starting work at 6:30 am. Known for his tough negotiating skills, he emphasized integrity and fair dealings throughout his career.

Recalling memorable moments, Hetherington highlighted the significance of winning the World Club Challenge and the pride in nurturing local talents, particularly players like Rob Burrow, a revered figure at the club who tragically lost his battle with MND.

Looking ahead, Hetherington’s legacy will be defined by his dedication to giving his best to Leeds Rhinos, encapsulating his ethos of relentless effort and integrity.
