Officials have confirmed the death of a National Guard member who was targeted in an attack in Washington DC. President Trump announced the passing of Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old female member, due to her injuries. Andrew Wolfe, the second National Guard member involved, remains in critical condition. The announcement of Sarah’s death was made during a Thanksgiving call with US service members on Thursday.
Trump described Sarah as a highly respected and young individual who was savagely attacked and did not survive. Sarah’s father, Gary Beckstrom, expressed the severity of her injuries earlier on Thursday to the New York Times. Governor Patrick Morrisey praised Sarah’s courage and dedication to duty, expressing condolences to her family and fellow Guardsmen.
The incident involved a suspected shooter identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national. The FBI is investigating the attack as a potential act of terror. Lakanwal allegedly shot Sarah near the Farragut West Metro Station, resulting in critical injuries to both National Guard members.
Following the shooting, the suspect was apprehended and taken for medical treatment. Trump extended condolences to the affected families and criticized current immigration policies. Law enforcement sources reported that the assailant immediately opened fire on the guards near the White House, leading to his subsequent arrest.
Efforts to halt immigration requests related to Afghan nationals were initiated in response to the incident. The protection and safety of the American people were highlighted as top priorities. While condemning the attack, an Afghan advocacy group emphasized the importance of not unfairly targeting Afghan communities in America.
