WhatsApp is addressing a significant concern by introducing a new feature, prompting users to take action promptly to stay current. Currently, the platform only allows communication through phone numbers, which is not always convenient.

After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is finally rolling out unique usernames as an alternative to sharing phone numbers. This change aims to provide users with more privacy and control over their interactions.

According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can be a barrier when connecting with new contacts, like classmates, neighbors, or event participants. The new feature of usernames will offer a solution for those who prefer not to disclose their phone numbers for casual conversations.

Additionally, the update will enhance privacy in group chats, allowing users to engage in community discussions without immediately revealing personal phone numbers to strangers.

Users can now reserve their preferred usernames in advance of the full launch. Due to the platform’s massive user base, popular usernames may get claimed quickly. Therefore, early reservations will increase the chances of securing desired usernames.

To reserve a username, users must update their WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The rollout of this feature will happen gradually over the next few months, with notifications sent to users when usernames become available in their region.
