A little girl posed a heart-wrenching query to her father before he callously left her and her young siblings in jeopardy on a frigid mountain: “Daddy, are we going to freeze to death?” The distressing scene unfolded during a hike led by 31-year-old Micah Smith, who now faces charges of child torture and aggravated child abuse for subjecting his two, four, and eight-year-old children to the dangers of a challenging mountainous trek on October 11.

Initially perceived as a harmless outing, the hike quickly turned perilous as the ill-equipped children expressed fear and exhaustion while their father obstinately continued upward, disregarding their pleas to turn back. According to the indictment, Smith prioritized summiting the mountain over the safety of his kids, ignoring their cold, tired pleas to return home.

Setting off on the strenuous Broads Fork Trail in Utah’s Big Cottonwood Canyon that morning, Smith misinformed his daughter about the hike’s length, leading them into a treacherous five-mile journey with a steep 2,100 ft elevation change. Despite Smith claiming to have brought supplies, the children consumed them early on, leaving them fatigued and unprepared for the journey ahead.

As adverse weather approached, the children grew increasingly distressed, with the daughter urging her father to reconsider, only to be met with dismissive responses. The situation worsened as the storm intensified, prompting a dangerous descent during which the children suffered hypothermia and injuries, requiring desperate attempts at warmth and resuscitation.

Rescuers eventually located the children sheltering near the mountaintop, where the two youngest were found unconscious and critically ill. Smith’s reckless actions culminated in a harrowing ordeal, with the children enduring life-threatening conditions due to his negligence.

Smith’s subsequent arrest revealed a pattern of concerning behavior, including prior suicidal ideations and interference in his son’s medical care. This tragic incident underscores the importance of responsible outdoor activities and parental care, shedding light on the dire consequences of neglect and recklessness in hazardous environments.
