Envoi Allen tragically passed away following his participation in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The racecourse’s veterinarians rushed to his aid as he collapsed while returning to the stables.
This marks the third equine fatality at this year’s Festival, with Hansard and HMS Seahorse also succumbing, albeit after falls.
Prior to the race, Envoi Allen’s owners, Cheveley Park Stud, had confirmed that it would be the 12-year-old horse’s final competitive appearance before retirement. Despite finishing in ninth place as the oldest contender, Envoi Allen crossed the finish line just behind Harry Redknapp’s The Jukebox Man. Gaelic Warrior emerged victorious in the Gold Cup, triumphing as the joint-favorite by a significant eight-length margin over the runner-up Jango Baie, with Inothewayurthinkin securing third place.
A spokesperson for Cheltenham Racecourse expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Envoi Allen collapsed on the course after completing our fifth race of the day. Despite immediate attention from a team of veterinary experts, he unfortunately did not survive. Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those connected to Envoi Allen.”
The unfortunate passing of Envoi Allen was followed by another tragedy as Saint Le Fort suffered a fatal fall during the week’s final race, bringing the total count of horse fatalities at the 2026 Festival to four.
Envoi Allen’s jockey, Darragh O’Keeffe, recounted the distressing incident, describing how the horse collapsed while trotting back post-race, despite initially appearing in good health and spirits.
Richard Thompson, representing the horse’s owners, expressed sadness over the unexpected turn of events, highlighting Envoi Allen’s exceptional career and character, stating, “He was such a lovely little horse, and it wasn’t the ending we wanted. He’s been an incredible servant and just wonderful over the years. It’s such a sad way to go.”
Reflecting on the loss, Gold Cup-winning jockey Andrew Thornton and commentator John Hunt paid tribute to Envoi Allen’s legacy and the significant impact he had on the racing community.
Envoi Allen, a seasoned champion with 31 races under his belt and over £1 million in prize money, left a lasting impression on the racing world. The Jockey Club, organizers of the Cheltenham Festival, reiterated their commitment to equine welfare and highlighted ongoing measures to enhance safety standards within the industry.
