Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post critical of the Saudi regime, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, to obtain marriage documents. It is believed that he was murdered inside the consulate and subsequently dismembered. Turkish authorities discovered evidence of the murder and tampering with the crime scene.
The United Nations has held the Saudi state responsible for the premeditated murder of Khashoggi. Despite international condemnation, Trump has consistently praised Saudi Arabia and its leadership.
During a White House event welcoming Crown Prince Salman, Trump faced questions from ABC News regarding Khashoggi’s murder. Trump vehemently defended Salman and criticized the reporter, labeling the inquiry as “fake news.”
Salman, in response to concerns raised by 9/11 families over his warm reception at the White House, expressed sympathy for the families affected by the tragic event. He denied any Saudi involvement in the 9/11 attacks and referred to Khashoggi’s murder as a significant error, pledging efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.
