Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are exhibiting red discoloration and wilting due to the severe drought experienced last summer, sparking concerns for the future of these iconic trees in the region. Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been closely monitoring reports from woodlot owners and personally witnessing the detrimental effects as the vibrant evergreens, commonly used as Christmas trees, gradually shift to a red hue, dry out, and succumb to death.
According to Prof. Taylor, the observed trend aligns with previous instances following periods of hot and arid weather conditions. He emphasized that the warm and dry climate, such as the recent drought, significantly hampers the growth potential of balsam fir trees. Taylor’s research over the years has highlighted similar die-offs of balsam firs after exceptionally hot and dry summers in 1986 and 2018.
The adverse impact of drought on balsam firs is attributed to the trees prematurely halting the photosynthesis process in response to water scarcity, hindering their growth. This disruption leads to a lack of essential energy reserves required for basic metabolic functions and defense mechanisms, rendering the trees vulnerable to additional stressors like pests or diseases, ultimately increasing the likelihood of mortality.
One key challenge faced by balsam firs is their shallow root system, making it difficult for them to access sufficient water during prolonged dry spells. Woodlot owner Peter McKeil noted the alarming transformation of his trees, with the lower branches turning red and new red spots emerging continuously, indicating an ongoing die-off. McKeil has already lost around 100 trees and has adjusted his harvesting practices to salvage the remaining fir trees before further losses occur.
Expressing concern for the future of the balsam fir species in the face of escalating climate change impacts, McKeil emphasized the urgent need for climate action. Prof. Taylor echoed these sentiments, describing the visible red trees as a tangible manifestation of the detrimental effects of climate change on New Brunswick’s iconic tree species. He emphasized the urgent necessity to transition away from fossil fuels and adopt sustainable forest management practices to combat climate change and preserve the ecological balance for future generations.
