Plant enthusiast Klaus Koehler made a unique discovery while exploring the Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit in July. During his stroll, he came across an uncommon plant species in the Arctic, known as bladderwort, which could have implications for the presence of invasive species in Northern regions as the climate continues to warm.
Koehler described the plant as inconspicuous to the untrained eye but distinctive to those familiar with it. The carnivorous bladderwort is covered with small black bladders containing partially digested flies, a characteristic rarely seen in the tundra.
The last documented sighting of bladderwort in the area dates back to 2012 when a scientific team found samples outside Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. This discovery was recorded in the scientific journal Phytokeys.
During three expeditions to the Arctic, the same team identified over 30 new plant species in the Arctic archipelago.
Koehler believes the appearance of bladderwort may signal a shift in climate conditions. While the Arctic has historically had few invasive species due to its harsh climate, the warming temperatures are now creating a more favorable environment for plants not typically found in the region.
He anticipates that this trend will alter the ecosystem, with both invasive and native species expanding their ranges into the Arctic as summers become warmer and winters milder.
Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature, shares these concerns, particularly regarding the potential introduction of non-native plants via birds, cargo ships, and visitors to the Arctic.
While Koehler’s discovery is not expected to have significant ecological impacts, the introduction of other invasive species could pose a threat. A study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2025 identified over 2,500 species with the capability to invade Arctic ecosystems.
Sokoloff emphasized the need to monitor and understand the effects of climate change on plant migration into the Arctic. Koehler plans to send a sample of the Iqaluit bladderwort to the Museum of Nature for further analysis, aiming to contribute to the ongoing research on plant expansion in the region.
