In Delta, B.C., reminiscing about cherished childhood memories often brings to mind family dinners shared while seated on a cozy beige mat. The setting sun would cast a warm amber glow, enhancing the experience of savoring a delightful Pakistani meal. Whether it was the aromatic biryani with saffron accents or the comforting butter chicken with homemade naan, these meals symbolized a tradition passed down from Lahore to North Delta by my father.

Beyond mere sustenance, my father emphasized that dining on the floor together instilled a sense of humility and gratitude for the food we enjoyed. This simple act of togetherness not only connected us as a family but also served as a means of honoring our cultural heritage across generations.

As the years flew by, the busyness of life gradually eroded the frequency of our family gatherings on the floor. Over a decade had slipped away since we last sat on that humble mat, until a Thanksgiving dinner at the age of 23 reignited the tradition. Inviting my friends from diverse backgrounds to partake in this experience, we recreated the circle on the floor, sharing a Thanksgiving feast and bridging cultural divides.

The night unfolded beautifully as my father, intrigued by the revival of the tradition, joined us on the floor, sharing its significance with our guests. The simplicity of togetherness resonated with everyone, evoking feelings akin to sitting around a campfire.

Inspired by this reunion, my family decided to embrace this tradition once more. Gathering around the mat, we shared stories, laughter, and leftovers, reaffirming the bond that transcends our hectic schedules. As the sun sets, we make a concerted effort to prioritize these moments of togetherness, whether on the floor or around a more formal dining table, recognizing the enduring value of family unity throughout the seasons and across generations.
