Simone Abrahamsohn, residing in Toronto, shared her experience of taking on the role of her big brother’s primary caregiver following the passing of her mother. Managing the co-habitation of two neurodivergent siblings has presented its challenges, despite the joy of having her brother, Stuart, as a roommate. Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily activities due to his hand tremor and emotional lability triggered by loud noises.

Reflecting on their childhood, Simone recalled feeling embarrassed by Stuart’s behaviors, such as stimming and introversion, leading to misunderstandings from others. Despite their differences, Simone acknowledged her own struggles with ADHD and the effort put into masking her condition to fit societal norms. She highlighted the importance of understanding and accommodating each other’s needs to foster a harmonious living environment.

As they navigate their unique dynamic, Simone strives to be more present and inclusive in decision-making, acknowledging Stuart’s listening presence even when he remains quiet. Adjusting their routines and seeking external support, Simone is dedicated to creating a supportive living arrangement for both siblings. Embracing this second chance to strengthen their bond, Simone is determined to make the most of their relationship, prioritizing their well-being over personal pursuits.

Despite the challenges and sacrifices, Simone finds fulfillment in her role as Stuart’s caregiver and values the opportunity to enhance their sibling relationship through mutual understanding and support.
