The United Kingdom experienced its highest temperature of the year on Thursday, hitting 38.1 degrees Celsius in west London, according to the national weather service. This hot spell is part of a prolonged period of intense heat affecting Europe.

The Met Office confirmed that the temperature exceeded the previous 2026 high of 38 degrees Celsius recorded in June. However, it fell short of the UK’s August record of 38.5 degrees Celsius set in 2003.

Both Britain and France are currently facing their fifth heat wave of the year, starting as early as May. This year has witnessed a record number of four days with temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius and two days reaching 38 degrees Celsius.

In France, temperatures have soared even higher, nearing 41 degrees Celsius in multiple regions from Aquitaine in the southwest to the Rhone River valley in the east, as reported by the country’s national weather service.

The extreme heat is expected to shift eastward away from Britain and France by Friday and gradually subside over the weekend. However, the lack of adequate infrastructure to cope with such high temperatures is evident in both countries, where air conditioning is a rarity outside of commercial establishments.

In the UK, healthcare workers, including nurses, have been affected by heat exhaustion due to inadequate cooling in hospitals housed in older buildings. The Royal College of Nursing highlighted the challenges faced by staff struggling to work in such conditions.

The ongoing heatwave has also resulted in widespread drought across Europe, leading to crop failures and water scarcity. Southern Water in England has applied for a rare drought order to restrict non-essential water use, citing an unprecedented lack of rainfall affecting supplies in certain regions.

With the risk of wildfires increasing in dry and parched landscapes, authorities in Britain and France are on high alert. In England and Wales alone, over 1,000 wildfires have been recorded this year, emphasizing the urgent need for adaptations to the changing climate.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is considering a ban on disposable barbecues to mitigate the wildfire risk posed by the prevailing extreme heat. Similarly, French firefighters are facing challenges as they respond to fires in various regions, including those not traditionally prone to such incidents.

The current climate conditions underscore the pressing need for both countries to adapt to the new reality of more frequent and severe heatwaves and their associated challenges.
