In the depths of the jungle, a new serpent has emerged, bearing a name that resonates with rock enthusiasts. Researchers at the Field Museum in Chicago have christened a recently discovered, harmless groundsnake from New Guinea as Lielaphis slashi, paying homage to the renowned Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash.
Measuring approximately 71 centimeters, this reddish-brown creature is now officially recognized as Slash’s groundsnake. The accolade holds special meaning for Slash, described by the Field Museum as a passionate reptile enthusiast and a dedicated advocate for zoos and museums.
The musician’s affinity for serpents is well-documented, evident in his musical endeavors and personal interests. Slash’s involvement with the rock group Slash’s Snakepit in 1994, comprising members from various iconic bands, underscores his enduring fascination with snakes.
Expressing his gratitude, Slash remarked, “I am extremely honored and humbled to have Lielaphis slashi from New Guinea named after me. It is really exciting. I never would have imagined this moment would arrive.”
Sara Ruane, the Field Museum’s associate curator of herpetology and lead author of a Zootaxa publication detailing the new species, shared her early passion for reptiles, which culminated in the naming of this groundsnake after Slash. Ruane recalled a childhood encounter with a magazine featuring Slash and his pet python, sparking the idea of honoring him in this unique way.
The discovery of Slash’s groundsnake dates back to 2006 when Chris Austin, a professor at Louisiana State University’s Museum of Natural Science, encountered the species during fieldwork in New Guinea. The island’s rich biodiversity, concealed within its lush forests, poses challenges for researchers navigating its uncharted territories.
Genetic analysis confirmed the distinctiveness of Lielaphis slashi, distinguishing it from its genus counterparts. While the snake poses no threat to humans, its habitat faces encroachment from industries such as coffee cultivation and mining, posing a greater peril to its survival.
Beyond its rock-inspired moniker, naming the snake serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate ecosystems awaiting exploration by scientists.
