Top-seeded Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury sustained after his Wimbledon victory. Despite securing back-to-back titles at the All England Club, Sinner had to skip the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments, essential warmup events for the U.S. Open. The 25-year-old Italian confirmed his withdrawal from the main draw starting on August 30 in a recent statement.
In a message shared on social media, Sinner expressed his disappointment at missing the tournament, citing the need for additional recovery time for his right knee problem. He mentioned that despite working diligently with his team and medical staff, he is not fit to compete at this year’s U.S. Open. Sinner, who claimed the U.S. Open title in 2024 and was the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz last year, was looking forward to returning to the lively New York setting and engaging with the passionate fans.
In contrast, Alcaraz, who has been sidelined since April due to a right wrist injury, announced his readiness to participate in the U.S. Open. The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a focal point in men’s tennis, culminating in their recent clashes in the Grand Slam finals. Alcaraz emerged victorious in the last encounter, defeating Sinner in four sets in New York, ending Sinner’s title defense from the previous year.
Sinner has had a remarkable season, boasting a record of 44 wins and 3 losses with six titles. Despite a setback at the French Open, he regrouped and triumphed at Wimbledon, securing his fifth Grand Slam title. This will mark the first time Sinner will miss a Grand Slam event since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019.
